Healthy Living Supplements

More often than not, by the time you pay a little visit to our dear doctors, you have allowed your body to get into such a state that you are already feeling uncomfortable symptoms. It may seem otherwise, but it usually takes years to get to this point. And, not surprisingly, it will take months and even years to get you out of it and back to better health.

When it comes to health, there are no shortcuts. While a healthy lifestyle that consists of a proper, balanced diet and regular exercise are still the best way towards healthy living, there are also substances in nature that can help you get there. Natural health supplements can help restore the body to a state of healthy balance. And it’s not just for those who already feel an impending health crisis, but also for those are perfectly healthy. Here are just a few reasons why supplements play an important part in your health:

Nutrient Drain

Even with a healthy plant-based diets filled with the freshest fruits and vegetables, it is still very likely that you are not getting sufficient amounts of the essential nutrients that your body needs. Over the last 50 years, the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables has significantly decreased. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition evaluated 43 garden crops and found them to have diminished levels of nutrients. The researchers cited, “[a]s a group, the 43 foods show apparent, statistically reliable declines (R < 1) for 6 nutrients (protein, Ca, P, Fe, riboflavin and ascorbic acid)…”

It is also possible that the soils in which these plants were planted have insufficient mineral content. Planting in the same soil repeatedly depletes that soil’s mineral content. Apart from this, changing climates and commercial fertilizers also contribute to the nutrient drain.

Overcooking

In the interest of getting “strong flavors” or killing off germs and bacteria, we tend to overcook our food. But this causes the food to lose a huge chunk of its vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. According to the Food and Nutrition Service of the US Department of Agriculture, “Heating food causes nutrient loss, especially vitamin C. Avoid prolonged overcooking.”

Skipping Meals

A busy world means a busy you. In the flurry of a hectic day, it is the time for meals that is often sacrificed. So many people skip meals. Grabbing a bagel now and then chowing down on a king’s feast later to “make up for it” only puts undue stress on your digestion system. And yet, there simply are days when there’s too little time for a proper meal.

While health supplements are not replacements for food, they can certainly provide vital support to your body, give your likely insufficient diet a much-needed boost and even potentially inhibit chronic diseases. Magnesium supplementation, for example, has given promising results in studies on colorectal cancer in women. Research done by The National Institute of Environmental Medicine in Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm found “an inverse association of magnesium intake with the risk of colorectal cancer.” The study concluded that “a high magnesium intake may reduce the occurrence of colorectal cancer in women.”

Calcium supplementation has likewise yielded positive results. In a study done by the SmithKline Beecham Consumer Healthcare, an estimated “134,764 hip fractures and $2.6 billion in direct medical costs could have been avoided if individuals aged > or =50 years consumed approximately 1200 mg/d of supplemental calcium.”
