Fighting Free Radicals
Considered one of the bad guys of health, free radicals have been steadily gaining interest from scientists, health experts and researchers. Free radicals are oxygen molecules gone bad—highly unstable and highly reactive, they are missing a critical molecule (hence the moniker “free”) and so they set out on a rampage in the body to rob any molecule to fill that need. This, in turn, injures cells, damages DNA and ultimately creates a seed for disease. All these result from the physiological process called oxidation. And, too bad for you, it’s a necessary process to keep the body healthy.
Apart from that, certain pollutants in the environment create a background of unwanted free radical damage. Continuous free radical attacks in the body can lead to a host of chronic diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. In the world we live in today, it’s inevitable. The oxidative burden has been found to be dramatically higher than it was 200 years ago.
So do you just keep taking the blows without fighting back? Of course not. Your body can fight free radical damage with the help of wonderful saviors from nature called antioxidants.
Antioxidants are naturally-occurring substances that have the ability to counteract the damaging effects caused by free radicals. They are almost exclusively found in plants, as they are responsible for giving fruits and vegetables their vibrant colors. Aside from that, because plants also experience oxidation and therefore also have to deal with free radical damage, antioxidants neutralize these rogues of nature and protect plants from potential harm.
The human body does not produce its own antioxidants so they must be obtained from sources that are rich with them, like plants or natural health supplements. There are many kinds of antioxidants. They can be carotenoids, like beta-carotene and lycopene, or chemicals, like ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and vitamin E.
Supplying the body with antioxidants will help it fight free radical damage, mopping up rampaging free radicals even before they collide with any of your healthy tissues. According to Jeffrey Blumberg, PhD, professor of nutrition at Tufts University in Boston, “We have clear science about antioxidants, that our bodies need a Natural Antioxidant Defense Network, for lack of a better term. Just like a country needs a military system, the human body needs defense workers at all levels—lieutenants, corporals, generals, staff sergeants—in the form of antioxidants."
Antioxidants may not be the be-all, end-all cure to chronic diseases, but it will provide much-needed support and protection to your body.
