About Resveratrol

 1.)   What is Resveratrol?

It is a phytoalexin or plant-produced antibiotic formed naturally by many plants when under attack by pathogens like bacteria or fungi.

 2.)   Where is it found?

Commonly reported to be an ingredient in red wine, the natural chemical resveratrol can also be found in over 70 plant species such as nuts, grapes, pine trees, certain berries, and many others.

Examples of foods with the highest natural concentration of resveratrol are purple and red-skinned grapes. They typically contain ten times as much resveratrol as is found in blueberries. However, even in the same type of grapes, the amount of resveratrol may vary depending on where and how the grapes are grown.

  3.)   Why should we care about resveratrol?

Scientists began investigating the potential health benefits of resveratrol when a significant amount of it turned up in red wine, leading some to speculate that resveratrol might help shed light on the "French Paradox".

FYI: The "French Paradox" is the observation that the occurrence of coronary heart disease is relatively low among the French population despite relatively high levels of saturated fats in their diet, hinting that regular consumption of red wine might provide additional protection from cardiovascular disease. It was coined in 1992 by Dr. Serge Renaud, a scientist from Bordeaux University in France.

Recently, resveratrol garnered even more publicity when it was featured in a television episode of Oprah. Celebrity surgeon Dr. Oz, who was the special guest, recommended the anti-aging resveratrol supplement on the March 24th Oprah show.

According to Dr. Oz on the March 24 Oprah show, "This extreme life extension pill could add up to 30 years on our life expectancy." He went on to say that in order to get the same effects from wine itself, one would have to consume over a dozen bottles a day (without the bad effects).

4.) What are the benefits?

Studies have shown that resveratrol is a potent antioxidant, which contributes to its anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer attributes. These may aid in preventing free radical damage to our bodies and offer protective support to the blood vessels brought about mainly by increased levels of blood glucose.

Resveratrol has also been discovered to inhibit the production of various human cancer cell lines, including those from breast, prostate, stomach, colon, pancreatic, and thyroid cancers.

In addition, current research has found that resveratrol is packed with anti-aging properties, therefore being hailed as "The Fountain of Youth."

5.)   Are there risks?

Risks associated with long term consumption of high levels of resveratrol, if any, have not been determined.  Dosage, as well as safety and effectiveness for human consumption are not yet established.  Some physicians have voiced concerns that its estrogen-like compounds may stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells.

7.)  Does purity and micronization matter?

As in most food supplements and medicines, the first reference for determining proper dosage is body weight.  In general terms, the more you weigh, the higher the dosage required.

The active ingredient in resveratrol is trans resveratrol. Resveratrol supplements are commonly sold offering many different levels of purity;10%, 30%, 50%, 80%, and premium offerings at 98% purity. If you purchase a supplement which claims 50% purity, it means that 50% of the extract is trans resveratrol and 50% is "something else".  This "something else" can be meaningless (from a benefits perspective) or it may even be harmful. It is important to choose your resveratrol product carefully. If a label states Resveratrol but fails to specify the strength or purity, then it is typically 10% or less trans-resveratrol - and this is not good.

We offer resveratrol in 98% pure micronized form only. We believe that purity and micronization are important for a number of reasons. If the product you take has a high purity, it follows that there are less by-products present in each serving. As discussed above, it is well known that in the refining process, one of the common by-products present is emodium, which can act as a natural laxative. Our own laboratory testing reveals that resveratrol supplements with a 50% purity level contain up to 40% emodium.  So, one benefit of taking a high purity dosage is that it minimizes the presence of other compounds greatly. Micronization (meaning that the average particle size of the product is reduced - in our case, to a very small size ranging between 1-2 microns) is also very important. Studies suggest that smaller particles result in better bioavailability which, in  plain language, means the amount of resveratrol that reaches the intended destination in the body is improved.

5.) Do you have shipping options?

For deliveries within the Unites States, we offer two US Postal Service shipping options: USPS Standard Flat Rate and, USPS Express Service. Delivery through the Standard Flat Rate is $4.95 anywhere in the US. If you elect to receive your products faster, fees will follow the USPS Express Service zone rates (as low as $13.65). The time indicated above is based on standard business days (Monday to Friday, excluding national holidays). Shipping time may be longer for certain States including Hawaii and Alaska.

For international shipment, we ship via First-Class International Mail (USPS) for a flat rate of $7.95 charged in US currency. Shipping time varies from 7 to 21 days after the order has been processed, depending on the country of destination. Customers outside of the US maybe subjected to customs fees and/or import duties and taxes, which are levied once shipment reaches your country. The added charges for customs clearance will be borne by you.

In the event that Customs in your country returns your order to us, we will refund to your credit card your total, minus your shipping charges to you and back to us (as we must pay our carrier the same shipping charge to return your order back to us), plus any other amount Customs may have charged us for holding, processing and returning your package.

Please note that when ordering from us, you are considered the importer of record and must comply with all laws and regulations of the country in which you are receiving the goods. We encourage you to contact your local Customs office for further information for the import of health care products.

Do you have Order Processing deadlines?

Orders received before 1PM EST Monday to Friday (except holidays) will be processed the same day. After the cut-off time, orders will be processed on the next business day.

How do I know that my order has been shipped? 

You will receive an automated shipment confirmation email, sent to the address you provided at the time of ordering, once we have processed your order and USPS has picked it up for delivery.

Do you have free shipping?

Yes! We offer free Standard Flat Rate shipping worldwide on all individual orders totaling $75 and more!

7.)   I want to return a product. What do I do?

We take pride in the quality of our products and want you to be pleased with your purchase. If you are dissatisfied with anything you have purchased from us, and you request a return within 30 days of the purchase date, we will happily take the product back and refund your money in full.

The refund process is simple:

STEP ONE:  Contact us via email at customersupport@pureandhealthy.com and request a  Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA). Be sure to include your name, email address and order number in your email. The order number can be found on the upper left-hand side of the Sales Invoice.

You will receive an email response within 24 hours, providing you with an RMA number as well as specific instructions on how to return the product to us, at our expense.

STEP TWO: Package the products as requested, clearly labeling the outside of the package with the RMA number provided to you, and return the products using the shipping account number we provide, to the following address:
