D-Calcium

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that aids your body in maintaining normal calcium absorption. Its two major forms are vitamin D2 (ergoclaciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). It is naturally present in some foods, like the flesh of fish, including pink salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel, as well as in cheese, oatmeal, cow’s milk, soy milk, and egg yolk. But it is also produced in the body simply by exposure to the sun! It has been found that as little as 10 minutes of sun time is enough to prevent vitamin D deficiencies, which lead to diseases like rickets (impedes growth and causes deformities). However, if your diet consists of too little foods rich in vitamin D, or if you’re not too fond of fun in the sun, you also can get the dose of vitamin d that your body needs from health supplements. According to the Food and Nutrition Board, the Adequate Intake (AI) of vitamin D for both healthy adult males and females is 5 micrograms per day.

DCalcium_BackPain.jpgVitamin D’s main function is to help your body in efficiently utilizing calcium, which plays a key role in maintaining strong bones. Apart from this, it has also been found to be a potent immune system modulator. Additionally, studies have shown that vitamin D insufficiency may be an important contributing factor to osteoporosis, a disease characterized by fragile bones that increases the risk of bone fractures. Research done by the Department of Endocrinology of the Vrije Universiteit Medical Center in Amsterdam found that insufficient vitamin D prevented the absorption of intestinal calcium from being maximized. This causes an increased parathyroid secretion, which may lead to bone fractures. Some studies also suggest that vitamin D may protect against various cancers. The Department of Cell Biology of Baylor College of Medicine in Texas indicated that there is a relationship between risk factors for prostate cancer and conditions that result in insufficient levels of vitamin D.

Two other essential minerals that promote your bone health are calcium and magnesium. Calcium is among the most abundant of the essential minerals in your body. Its chief purpose is to build and maintain your bones and teeth. High levels of calcium are known to help increase the durability and strength of your body’s primary support structure as well as regulate the rhythm of your heart. Other effects discovered include the potential to ease insomnia and help facilitate the process in which cells absorb nutrients in the blood.

A deficiency in calcium can cause a number of negative effects. The most common symptoms are spasms in the arms and legs. Other signs include a softening of the bones, cramping in the back and legs, rickets, poor growth and tooth decay. Studies have also linked calcium deficiency to depression and osteoporosis. According to the Food and Nutrition Board, the Adequate Intake (AI) of calcium for both healthy adult males and females is 1000 mg per day.

Magnesium, on the other hand, is believed to play a role in over 300 reactions in your body involving enzymes. It is known to play a role in regulating the neuromuscular activity of the heart, allowing for the maintenance of a normal rhythm. It is also a component in the process that turns blood sugar into energy. The Food and Nutrition Board set the Recommended Dietary Allowance of magnesium to 400 to 420 mg per day for healthy adult males, and 310 to 320 mg per day for healthy adult females.
