What is BSE?
BSE or bovine spongiform encephalopathy is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease in cattle that causes a spongy degeneration in the brain and spinal cord. Although the origin of the disease is unknown, a British inquiry into the condition found that the epidemic was caused by cattle that have been fed the remains – meat and bone meal – of other cattle.
BSE and the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
Because of the similarity in symptoms, BSE has been related to a new variant of the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease or vCJD. vCJD is a degenerative brain disease that is incurable and invariably fatal. It is the most common among the types of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy found in humans.
According to WHO (World Health Organization), vCJD is a new rare and fatal human neurodegenerative disease. While its older forms typically affected 65 years old patients, vCJD has also been affecting younger patients around the ages of 29. vCJD also has a relatively longer duration of illness and strongly linked to exposure through food to BSE.
The Symptoms of vCJD
WHO further reports that in the early stages of the disease, vCJD patients experience psychiatric symptoms including depression and, rarely, schizophrenia-like psychosis. Other symptoms include ‘stickiness’ of the skin, unsteadiness, difficulty of walking and involuntary movements. At its near fatal stages, patients can become completely immobile and mute.
Now that you know, be extra vigilant in making sure that the dietary supplements and food products you buy are BSE free.
While they have similarities, Halal and Kosher are not considered substitutes of each other.
Halal, meaning legal or lawful, is any object or action permissible under Islamic laws. Kosher, on the other hand, refers to food that conforms to the body of Jewish dietary laws called Kashrut.
Certification for both is voluntary for many food manufacturers. In spite of its religious nature, perhaps the major reason for compliance is the business associated with Muslim and Jewish customers. The CIA World Factbook estimates that in the US alone, 0.6 percent or 1.8 million are Muslims, and 1.7 percent or 5.2 million are Jewish. Needless to say, these numbers present a significant market for food and other products.
But the spirit behind Halal and Kosher are just as important as their economic significance.
According to the Islamic Network, Halal is all about the wise person choosing carefully how to earn and be sustained through life by picking the right kinds of food to eat. It is all about taking and earning only what is needed, so more can be had if and when the need arises. It is all about avoiding the trap of greed. And it makes sense, too, in today’s environment, where the excesses of the few can be mean deficiencies for others.
Many believe that at the bottom of keeping Kosher is an act of faith, where believers may not necessarily understand why so many regulations about food and its preparation has to be followed, but as it comes from God, they trust and obey anyway.
Kosher is also perceived by certain sectors of society as a set of dietary regulations, most of which are rooted in Biblical laws found in the Old Testament, that offer many health benefits. To date, Kosher practices still do promote health. For example, not mixing meat with milk promotes better digestion. Additionally, following the very sanitary Kosher ritual slaughter of meat helps protect us from a number of parasitic diseases.
